ESCAPE OF DRIVER AS MECHANICAL SHOVEL SLIDES INTO CLUTHA
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, July 24. A 7(J-ton mechanical shovel at the Roxburgh hydro-electric scheme slithered into the Clutha River on Saturday afternoon. The driver, who jumped clear, was moving the shovel to a new site when the engine stalled and the machine ran back to the river’s edge, which crumpled under the great weight of the machine. Engineers were unable to say today whether it would be possible to recover the machine in one piece, nor how long the recovery and repairs would take. It is thought that the damage to the machine is not extensive.
