U.S. Super-Carrier Not Yet Authorised

(11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 23. The Secretary of the Navy, Mr. Francis Matthews, denied that the construction of a huge new flush-deck air-craft-carrier would begin in 1951, as announced by a high Navy official. He said it had not yet been authorised. . . , The officer who made the original announcement later explained thcie had been a misunderstanding. He had meant to say that construction could not begin before the fiscal year starting in July, 1951. It will have a runway about 25 feet longer than the 98fift. of the largest United States carriers now in service. The super-carrier which Mr. Johnson stopped after the keel had been laid would have been 1090 ft. long.
