RETIRED MANAGER RECEIVES GIFTS FROM COLLEAGUES

An informal gathering at the residence of Mr. R. L. Maclean, Harris Street, provided an occasion on Tuesday for representatives of the staffs of various departments of Messrs. J. J. Niven and Company. Limited, to tender a farewell to their former manager. The visitors were delighted to find Mr. Maclean, whose retirement after long service with the firm followed a breakdown in his health, very much improved as a result of his recent stay in hospital.

Opportunity was taken to recall many incidents of mutual interest covering the years of his association with the firm both during and prior to his anpoinlment as Gisborne manager some 22 years ago. On behalf of the firm, Mr. W. V. Clarke presented Mr. Maclean with an album containing reproductions of photographs of directors and staffs, past and present, extending over the neriod of 50 years during which Mr. Maclean was actively engaged in the engineering industry.

A further presentation, made on behalf of the staffs of all branches of the firm from Auckland to Invercargill, took the form of a handsome oak writing desk, carrying a suitable inscription upon an inlaid plaque. In making the presentation. Mr. Clarke referred to the extremely happy relations between management and staffs in the firm, and stated that Mr. Maclean had had a large part in establishing this state of affairs. All who had known him in the trade would join in congratulating him on his well-earned retirement, and would wish him and Mrs. Maclean every happiness and long years together. Before the departure of the visitors Mr. F. G. Porton, who succeeded Mr. Maclean as Gisborne manager for the firm, expressed his keen appreciation of the guidance he had received from his predecessor in connection with the Gisborne organisation.
