VETERINARY CLUB HOLDS FIELD DAY IN TOLAGA BAY

TOLAGA BAY. June 3.

A large number of farmers of the district, as well as all the senior pupils of the Tolasa Bay High School, under the supervision of their headmaster and teachers, were present at the field day held by the Gisborne Veterinary Club in the Reynolds Hall. Mr T. Foley, the district representative of the club, welcomed the speakers and also those present. Mr. J Crarer was in the chair. He apo'ogised for the. absence of Mr. R. Crawford, who was unable to be present and introduced the speakers.

Mr. M Blunt, the club's district veterinary surgeon, gave an interesting lecture on the diseases of calves. Mr. H de'O Chamberlain, agricultural inst’-uctor of Gisborne, spoke on grasses. He emphasised the importance of early and thorough cultivation of the soil and the studv of selection of seed relative to the climatic conditions and the texture of the soil. He also spoke of the advantages of young oastures and the necessity for constant harrowing and early and heavy gim? ing and the choice of manures. He gave a list of suitable grass mixtures for the district. An attractive lunch was then served.

The first speaker after lunch was Miss A. S. Kyle, as there were present some students who were interested in the possibility of taking a course in veterinary work. Miss Kyle gave an outline of the qualifications required before starting a course and a description of the course itself. Mr M. Blunt then gave a practical demonstration on an ailing lamb. He found and showed the farmers the cause of malnutrition to be worms and showed the various types present. Mr N. Vickers, district manager of Borthwicks. Limited. Tokomaru Bay, spoke on the procedure for fixing the opening schedule meat prices for the season He also spoke on the grading of meat for export and the prices. Mr P. Brown, of Borthwicks, Limited, spoke on tanning. He demonstrated the best wav to make cuts to ensure the maximum value for the skin. He also showed skins before and after tanning, pointing out the lasting defects.

The day closed with a vote of thanks to the speakers.
