Seabed Photo Quest For Lost Atlantis
LONDON, March 31
An expedition to discover the lost Continent of Atlantis is being planned by Mr. Egerton Sykes, chairman of the Atlantis Research Centre, London.
Mr. Sykes believes that Atlan-S tis is beneath the ocean off the Azores, and from a Portuguese fishing smack intends lowering cameras near the seabed to take pictures of ruined buildings and other relics of this vanished civilisation.
Mr. Sykes said today: “I have a fairly good idea where to look. The hillsides of the Azores are the mountaintops showing above the sea of the old Continent of Atlantis.”
Mr. Sykes’ belief is based on books, pamphlets and maps by 5000 writers since the earliest recorded days of Oriental and Greek literature and on the fact that a dredge brought to the surface near the Canary Islands two grotesque stone statues.
Mr. Sykes said: "If at first I can just get one or two pictures of buildings or other evidence, I will then _ ask for equipment for a major expedition.” Mr. Sykes plans to start his photographic expedition within the next 12 months with a photographer specialised in submarine operations who has volunteered to join him.
