NAVAL OFFICER CLEARED OF TARAKAN BLAST
SYDNEY, March 31
A naval court-martial yesterday acquitted Lieutenant-Commander Cecil James Cochran, acting commanding officer of H.M.A.S. Tarakan, of a charge arising out of the explosion on the ship on January 25. Eight naval mop lost their lives in the explosion. Cochran was charged with having, between December 1, 1949, and January 25. omitted to treat the Taraknn’s petrol tank as a magazine as laid down in the regulations and with having, on January 24, omitted to see that precautions for the storage and handling of petrol were carried out.
