Duke Raises Nairobi To City Status
NAIROBI, March 30.
A salute of 21 guns today heralded the presentation by the Duke of Gloucester of the Royal Charter raising Nairobi to the status of a city. In return the Duke formally received a silver pot containing 30 peppercorns—a token payment to. discharge Nairobi’s long-standing debt to King George for 30 plots of Crown land in the municipality. Nairobi today celebrates half a century of municipal government. More than 100,000 of Nairobi’s people lined the processional route to the Town Hall and watched the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester arrive for the ceremony. The Duke read a message of congratulation from the King, who recalled his own visit to the new city. The Duke later became Nairobi’s first freeman.
