TOLAGA SUB-UNION HAS FOUR SENIOR TEAMS FOR 1950

COAST RUGBY

(Herald Correspondent.)

Four senior teams will compete in the Tolaga Bay Rugby Sub-Union’s 1950 competitions, in connection with which the public will have the advantage of the use of a new grandstand on the grounds. The annual meeting of the sub-union was held on Monday evening in the Reynolds Hall, when the president, Mr. E. Gorringe, in a review of the past season’s activities and the new season’s prospects, indicated that funds were at a very low level in consequence of the expenditure upon the grandstand, most of the labour on which had been voluntary.

The president pointed out that there was still a considerable amount of work to be done on the building, but it was hoped that the roofing would be completed shortly with the assistance of the Domain Board. The building when completed would certainly be an asset to sport, and besides seating accommodation would contain four dressingrooms and two showers. It was also hoped to instal a heating system for hot water.

The following clubs with their delegates were represented: Paikea, Messrs. J. and K. Malci; Tauwhareparae, Messrs. E. Gorringe and R. Lincoln; Country, Messrs. P. Waikarc and C. Nelson; llauiti, Messrs. A. McK. Stephens and J. Thompson; Wharekaka, Mr. E. Prince. The referees were represented by Messrs. S. Beeddel and B. Stewart and the Tolaga Bay District High School by Mr. Hawthorne.

The Paikea and Hauili clubs indicated that they would be entering both senior and junior teams, while Tauwhareparae and Country entered senior teams only and Wharekaka junior only.

A sub-committee of three. Messrs. I. James, R. Lincoln and Hawthorne, was appointed to investigate the possibility of forming a third-grade team or teams to compete with the High School team, which was considered to be too light and immature to play junior. The opening day for the senior competition was fixed for Saturday, April 22, while the junior and third grades were left to the management committee. Officers elected for the 1950 season were:—President. Mr. E. Gorringe, reelected, secretary and treasurer, Mr, W. 11. Laing; hon. auditor, Mr. R. Tregurtha.
