MARIST BEAT Y.M.P.
In a match productive of some of the best football seen in the junior grade this season Marist defeated Y.M.P. by 14 points to nine. Some excellent concerted movements, with Marist always prominent, emphasised the high standard of junior Rugby in Gisborne. The winners were in fine form throughout, the forwards gaining a majority of ball from all sources, and the backs having the edge on their opponents. The Marist rearguard frequently burst through the defence, a movement ending in B. Donovan, second five, scoring after a number of the forwards had handled, being especially impressive. Y.M.P. never at any time looked like the combination that beat H. 5.0.8. (A) in the curtain-raiser to the Australian match on August 24. For Marist tries were scored by R. Ferris. B. Donovan, T. Riley, J. Ferris, and H. Maxwell kicked a penalty goal. F. Whaanga and F. Jones scored tries for Y.M.P. and Jones kicked a penalty goal. The referee was Mr. J. Lockwood.
