INFORMATION SOUGHT ON STATE CONTRACTS
(P R.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. Information as to steps he had taken to let construction contracts to overseas firms for hydro-electric contracts was sought from the Minister of Works, Mr. R. Semple, by Mr. W. A. Bodkin (Oppos. Central Otago) in the House of Representatives today. He wanted to know whether such contracts would be limited to the supply of plant and machinery and, if so, would tenders be called for such plant. Mr. Bodkin also asked if the Minister contemplated letting contracts for the building of dams and other construction works to overseas firms and, if so, was it intended that such firms would be allowed to bring their own labour to New Zealand and would tenders be called for these works. While Government members sarcastically inquired whether he required an extension of time Mr. Bodkin wound up his question with a query as to particular overseas countries in which negotiations were at present proceeding.
