BITTER FIGHTING IN PROGRESS IN BURMA
(11 a.m.) RANGOON, Mar. 7.’ Bitter fighting is in progress between Government forces and Karens in Thazi, an important rail junction about 300 miles north of Rangoon, reports an official spokesman. Heavy casualties have been inflicted on rebels offering a stiff resistance at Myitnge, seven miles south of Mandalay and about 80 miles north of Thazi. Government reinforcements have gone to the scene of the fighting. A later message says that strong Government forces crushed stiff Karen resistance and reoccupied the town of Myitnge. The British Embassy announced today that British civilians and British services’ mission staff at Maymo would be brought to Rangoon by air and road. The announcement added that fighting still continued inside' Maymo, where 170 Britons were safe but facing a food shortage. The Embassy was arranging to drop food by air in the area.
