OLD FRIENDSHIPS RENEWED BY ENGLISH VISITOR

He had very pleasant recollections of New Zealanders he had met in France during the 1914-18 war, said Canon L. G. Mannering yesterday when speaking to members of the Gisborne Rotary Club. He recalled that while in charge of former prisoners-of-war, who, owing to illness had been transferred to Switzerland and interned, he had become firm friends with Mr. H. J. Poole, a Gisborne Rotarian. After the war the two men lost touch with each other, but 10 years ago Mr. Poole recognised Canon Mannering’s voice when he was broadcasting over the @8.8.C. Since that time the two men had corresponded regularly. He had made a special point of coming to Gisborne to see Mr. Poole, when he had the opportunity of visiting New" Zealand, continued Canon Mannering. At Gisborne he had also found Canon A. F. Hall, whom he had not seen for 40 years, when they attended school together.
