ROTARY CLUB MEMBERS THANKED FOR FOOD PARCELS
Thanks for what they had done in assisting the old .people of Bristol with food parcels were tendered to members of the Gisborne Rotary Club yesterday by Canon L. G. Mannering, of Bristol Cathedral, the speaker at the clubs weekly luncheon, held in the Bon Accord Lounge. Canon Mannering assured members that the food parcels were tremendously appreciated by the English people. Fat, dripping and honey were three of the hardest commodities to obtain in England and any parcel containing these foods was particularly welcome. When questioned as to the condition of England today, he could say she was sitting up and taking nourishment, said Canon Mannering. She had had rather a grim time, but the people could still laugh and still managed to get enough to eat. They were able to carry on, but the housewife especially worked under difficult conditions in trying to make do on the limited rations. “It would appear as if the position is improving however,” concluded Canon Mannering. “Britain isn’t down and out. She is up ahd doing.” (Applause).
