UNDERHAND ACTS ALLEGED AGAINST PUBLIC SERVANTS
“Press reports of general meetings at Gisborne and Nelson where public servants were stated to have dissociated themselves from the association’s policy on the Holmes victimisation issue were repudiated at the emergency conference bv delegates from those centre," states the February issue of the Public Service Journal.
"Mr. Shelton, Gisborne, explained that the press statement relating to his section was unauthorised and, as could be seen from the minutes, was partly untrue.
“Mr. Fitzgerald. Nelson, similarly assured delegates that his section had not committed a breach of association policy by making the public statement attributed to it.
“In both cases unauthorised individuals had published their own versions of proceedings.”
In the case of the Gisborne meeting, the report was' obtained from members of the association when it was found impossible to contact either the chairman or secretary of the section. The accuracy of the version published in the Herald has not been challenged previously. On the other hand, representatives of the Herald have been advised of a strong feeling of satisfaction among many-Gisborne members of the association, who felt the article placed their stand before the public in the correct light. The Herald did not have access to minutes of the meeting, but it can at least be said that we are assured-the general sentiment and tone of the article were in close accord with the feelings of a large section of those present at the Gisborne meeting.
