U.S. WORKLESS NOW 3,200,000 HIGHEST SINCE WAR ENDED

(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter —Copyright.) (11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Mar. 4. United States unemployment rose to a post-war high of. 3,200,000 in February, the Census Bureau reported today.

The figure was a„n increase of 550,000 over January and 1,250,000 above December- The figure is 600,000 higher than in February, 1948. The bureau said the increase was caused in part by bad weather in parts of the country and by other seasonal developments. However, the continuation of the non-seasonal lay-off noted in January probably accounted for a large part of the change. The latest figure is the highest since March 1942 when it was 3,580,000, after which it began a steady decline towards a wartime low.
