SOCIALIST PRESIDENT OF SWITZERLAND

GENEVA, Dec. 16,
M. Ernest Nobs, the 62-year-old Swiss Minister of Finance, was today elected the first Socialist President of Switzerland. He was elected for 1949 by a joint assembly of both Houses of Parliament by 192 votes out of a possible 197. He succeeds the Catholic Conservative, M. Enrico Celio. M. Max Petit-Pierre, the Radical Foreign Minister, was elected vice-President. M. Nobs has been a member of Parliament since 1919.
