RARE BOOKS STOLEN FROM PORTUGAL
(10.30 a.m.) LONDON. Dec. 12. The Portuguese police claim that some hundreds of rare books, valued at more than £300,000, which were stolen from the Portuguese National Library, had been traced to Holland and Belgium. says Reuter’s correspondent in Lisbon. The books, bearing the seal of the Portuguese National Library, were stated to have appeared on sale in Holland. The theft of the books was discovered months ago. The police believe they were taken during the war and sold to foreigners. Several have been recovered from collectors who bought them cheaply.
Among tlie stolen books are 100 early specimens of printing worth £70.000 and a life of Christ, valued at £15,000.
