WAIROA’S OPENING SPRING CATTLE FAIR A SUCCESS

The first spring cattle fair of the series conducted by the Wairoa Stock Auctioneers’ Association was conducted at the North Clyde saleyards last week, and drew an entry of upwards of 2000 head. The yarding included some exceptionally good lots in all classes and generally the condition of the cattle following the dry season was very good. A crowded bench of buyers representative of most North Island districts paid close attention to business from end to end of the sale, with strongest competition coming from the Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu areas. The sale must go down as one of the best held in Wairoa for a considerable number of years.

Mr. T. Davey’s annual draft of 3year P.A. steers was sold to Manawatu buyers at £ls ss, to top the market in that section. From Mr. H. G. Gibson’s property yearling steel's were penned to top the market at £8 9s. A very good line of empty P.A. cows realised £9 15s. Following is a range of prices: Yearling steers, good, £7 18s to £8 9s; average, £6 10s to £7 10s: small and mixed yearling steers, £2 10s to £5: 2year steers, good, £ll 2s to £ll 10s: average, £lO to £lO 30s; light and small 2-year steers. £8 10s to £9 10s; 3-ycar steers, vei\y good, £ls ss; average, £l2 12s to £l3 15s; yearling heifers, average. £5 17s to £6 ss; small. £2 9s to £4: 2yr. heifers, average, £7 18s to £8 11s; small. £5 17s Od: 3yr. heifers, £lO Is to £ll ss; in-calf cows, £7 15s; empty cows, £6 12s to £9 15s; bullocks, £23: fat cows, £lO 10s to £l4 Is; fat heifers, £ll to £l2 10s.
