“GOSPEL SINGER” STARTS MEETINGS IN GISBORNE

Large congregations on Sunday greeted Mr. Jacques Hopkins,. L.R.A.M., M.R.S.T., the 8.8. C. gospel singer, for the commencement of his series of meetings in the Gisborne Baptist Tabernacle. Palmerston road. Mr. Hopkins captivated his hearers by his fine, robust singing, his sympathetic interpretation of the music, and his clear enunciation. He also showed himself to be a very capable speaker.

During the morning service. Mr. Hopkins sang “The Lord's My Shepherd’’ to the famous tune “Crimmond”, the hymn song “Just The Same” by Jude, and the well known Gospel sona by P. B. Bliss, “Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy”. The subject of Mr. Hopkin’s address was “How Civilisation Can Be Saved”.

Mr. Hopkins began the evening service by singing "Sweet Is Thy Work” to the’ tune “Deep Harmony' 1 . Later in the service he sang a beautiful sacred song, entitled “Springtime”, which as yet is unpublished and has never before been sung in this country. The subject of his address was “It is I —lt Is Fnished —It Is Written”, which Mr. Hopkins followed by singing the hymn “Follow Me”. The organist throughout the day wa s Mr. H. J. Dunstan. Prior to the evening service, the Baptist orchestra played hymns and the hymn singing during the evening service was accompanied by both organ and piano, the pianis' being Mr. E. R. Hambly. Mr. Hopkins’ meetings will continue tonight and on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
