CARPENTERS SEEK RISE IN WAGE RATE

tP.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 4. A wage rate of 4s an hour, an increase of fivepcnce on the existing figure, was claimed by the New Zealand Carpenters and Joiners’ Union in proceedings in Conciliation Council for a new New Zealand (except Otago and Southland) carpenters ■ and joiners' award. A counter oiler by the employers contained a proposal for an increase in the wage rate to 3s lOld conditional on substantial changes in the clauses governing suburban work and penal rates. This proposition was not acceptable to the union’s representatives and the dispute will now be heard by the Court of Aribtration. Several clauses in addition to that governing wages remain in dispute. The hearing began yesterday in Conciliation Counncil on claims of the Labourers’ Union for a new award for builders’ labourers. The council will continue today.
