CLERK CHARGED WITH THEFT OF OVER £3OOO
(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 22. The theft of New Plymouth Borough Council moneys totalling £8056 13s 4d and the receipt of £IOO knowing it to have been stolen were alleged in 18 charges preferred against Ralph Eric Pickering, aged 21, in the police Court.
Pickering was formerly a clerk in the borough treasurer’s office. Evidence was heard first on the charge of theft of £1576 in various sums early in 1947, and on six charges of falsification.
Pickering pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. The hearing of the remaining charges will be continued today.
