SURPRISE RUGBY WIN

SUCCESS OF CITY (Herald Correspondent.)

One of the surprises of the season's club Rugby competition occurred on Saturday when City defeated Tokorarangi 17—3. Tokorarangi might reasonably have expected to have gained the lead in championship points out of this match but City, rising to the occasion to gain their first win of the season. altered that expectation and created an interesting situation in the Matakaoa inter-club competition. Wanderers defeated Hicks Bay, 6 —3.

Championship points to date are:— Senior. —Tokorarangi. G; Hicks Bay, 6; Wanderers, 5; City, 3. In the senior game on the Te Araron Domnin the City forwards outclassed Tokorarangi. The winners' outstanding players of the day were Sonny Brown at three-quarters and Tui Crawford in the pack. Tokorarangi’s wing. Harry Poi, was the pick of their backline, while Len Walker was their best forward. Tries for City were scored by T. Crawford, M. Stirling, S, Brown (2), and P. Edmonds, one being converted by M. Stirling. Tokornrangi's try was by S. Campbell. Mr. T. Walters was the referee.

The win of Wanderers over Hicks Bav was achieved on the Hicks Bay ground. For Wanderers S. Puha kicked a penalty goal and R. Rangihuna scored a try. R. Rata scored a try for Hicks Bay. Mr. W. Pcka was the referee.

In the junior match Hicks Bay defeated United. 17—0. Tries were scored for Hicks Bay by L. Tibbie. P. Hindmarsh. C Dewes. and R. McMeakin. W. Brown converted one try and was successful with a penalty kick.

Women's Hockey

On Friday the Awatere women's hockey team defeated a visiting Potaka side. 3—o. The game proved rich in excitement for a large group of spectators. J. and P. Houkamau played solidly for the visiting team while S. Huriwai and M. Leaf initiated some sparkling movements for Awatere. Goals for Awatere were scored by S. Huriwai K. Karaka and N. Glover. The referees were S. Patuwai and T. Houkamau. In the club series played on Saturday Kawakawa drew with Pohutu, neither side scoring in a fast game. Miss L. Karauti and Mr. A. Gordon were the referees Awatere defeated Hicks Bay by one goal to nil. Mrs. Peachey scoring for Awatere. The referees were Messrs. L. Tihorc and R. Rata.

Basketball

No club basketball matches were plaved on Saturday, the day's play being'devoted to selection of a representative team to meet Ruatoria. The selection is to be made by Mesdamcs C. Katae. of Tc Araroa, and K. Apanui, of Kopuapounamu.

Districts Schools’ Sports Three inter-school sports fixtures have been completed in the Matakaoa district schools’ series. Travelling to Whakaangiangi, Te Araroa played a drawn Rugby game, neither side scorm£oncurrenlly the Tc Araroa basketball A team defeated Whakaangiangi 10—5 and the C teams of the two schools drew, 3 —all. At Hicks Bay, the Te Araroa Rugby team played another drawn game. Foi Te Araroa David Ngatai scored a try and Ngati Stanton scored a try for H Tc S Araroa (Ay basketball team defeated Hicks Bay, 12—5, while the B teams drew with 3 goals each. Hicks Bay played a return series at Te Ara-ro-i where they were defeated 6—o. In the A basketball match Te Araroa were successful 14—5. Joan \\ anoa chiving an outstanding game for Te Araroa. The B teams played yet another drawn game, scoring live goals each.
