EFFORTS TO BE MADE TO GET NEW SITE FOR ORMOND SCHOOL

(S.R.) NAPIER, July 19. Because the silting effects of the recent flood have left the present school buildings in an unhealthy state, efforts are to be made to acquire a new site for the Ormond School and on this the buildings will be re-erected. This was decided at the latest meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Board foliowing strong representations by the Ormond School Committee. The committee urged that the school should be built on a new site well above flood level, as silt had rendered the buildings unhealthy because the flooring of a portion of the school was now on ground level and there was no ventilation under the building. It was also pointed out that it was imperative that a proper sanitary system be installed, but this could not be done on the present site. As the present site is low-lying and in wet weather becomes waterlogged, the committee suggested that the board acquire a portion of the estate of the late Mr. B. Newman, which is situated on the main road about 200 yards from the present school. The chairman, Mr. G. A. Maddison, took advantage of the visit of the acting Director of Education, Mr. A. F. McMurtie, to urge him to consider the matter as one of urgency as the Ormond School was in a deplorable condition through silting.
