AMNESTY OFFER TO PRISONERS IN
CZECHOSLOVAKIA (10 a.m.) PRAGUE. June 20. The Czech President, M. Gottwald, announced an amnesty for common criminals and said that political prisoners could apply for amnesty or mitigation of their sentences.
Common criminals serving sentences of less than one year will be released immediately and longer sentences will be reduced by one year. Czechoslovak citizens who have escaped abroad are offered amnesty, provided they return within three months. The amnesty will not apply to black marketeers or persons of German nationality. The Minister of Justice, M. Cepicka, broadcasting, said the amnesty puts an end to the inventions abroad that Czechoslovakia is a “police State.”
