LANDLORD’S ASSAULT ON TENANT
NEW YORK, May 14.
A 49-year-old landlord John Meehan was sentenced to four months' imprisonment for having beaten and kicked a tenant who had reported him to the Rent Control Board. Miss Rose Tanner told the court that following her official complaint that 40 dollars a month was an excessive rent for her one room, the landlord put her bed in a cellar. Later .when she demanded a rent receipt she was attacked suffering a broken nose and other injuries.
The judge’s comment was: “The paramount issue is whether landlords, by such conduct may circumvent emergency rent laws or otherwise flout regulations made to protect tenants in this housing crisis.”
