SECRET URANIUM PROBE ON THE RAND

JOHANNESBURG, April 27. Uranium used in the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima was once in Johannesburg. Mined in the Belgian Congo, it was placed in the safekeeping of some Johannesburg people, who did not know to what use it would be put. From Johannesburg it was flown secretly to America. Now it is learnt that intensive research is being carried out into the possibilities of uranium extraction becoming a by-product of the gold mining industry in South Africa. The research is being conducted by several Government Departments and mining institutions. Infinitesmal concentrates of uranium have been found in every ton of rock that is processed for the extraction of gold. Process Could be Found

A Johannesburg chemical engineer states that although the quantities of uranium found in gold-bearing ore is minute, a suitable process of extracting the uranium can be found. Existing mining machinery can, if necessary, be converted for the purpose.
