Tripped Over Mat.

When she tripped over a mat at the entrance to business premises in the shopping area in Gisborne on Friday, Mrs. Marion Beattie, Ormond road, suffered a broken hip and was later admitted to the Cook Hospital. Her condition this morning was reported to be comfortable. Radio-Telephone System. Fishermen operating from Timaru want to install radio-telephone systems on their launches. This information was given to the Timaru Harbour Board when the chairman Mr. R. S. Goodman said that the Fishermen’s Association had applied for a site for a receiving station on the board's property. As he understood it was intended that the station should operate for only short in each day, he thought the fishermen should work in with some other local body so that a 24hour service would be available. It was unlikely that a license would be granted to the fishermen said Mr. W. H. Hall (who is also a member of the Timaru Fire Board), but the Timaru Fire Board had a license and he believed that the fishermen would have no difficulty in working through them. No decision on the application was made in the meantime. Electrically-Operated Typewriter A typewriter which will reduce fatigue and increase output is being tried by the General Post Office, Wellington. If satisfied with the machine, it is possible that the postal authorities will buy several. Electrically operated, the machine has been found by the University of California to increase the output of expert typists by one third. It works with a flick of the keys instead of the thumping necessary on the ordinary machine. As the force with which the keys tap out their work is electrically controlled uniformity of typing is gained without the necessity of uniformity of touch. Perhaps the greatest boon is that the machine will produce 20 carbons without extra effort. On an ordinary machine 12 is about the maximum. Because of the different touch reauired it takes about a week for a tvpist to accustom herself to the new'typewriter.
