S.A. OFFICER RETIRES
Because of impaired health. Brigadier S. Hayes retired this week from active service in the Salvation Army. Commissioner R. M. Astbury presided over a public meeting in the Wellington Citadell to bid him official farewell before his departure with his wife to reside in Auckland.
Brigadier Hayes was a private in the First World War, in which he lost a leg, and a padre in World War 11. He began, his service as a corps officer more than 30 years ago, and on his return from the First World War he took charge of the army’s work in Hastings. After being cashier at national headquarters, Wellington, he was divisional commander both in Wellington and Auckland. Later he was secretary for trade affairs, and the position he has just vacated is national young people’s secretary.
