PENSIONER SENT TO GAOL: FALSE INCOME RETURNS

Because he had failed to furnish correct ' returns of income William. Cleaver, aged 65, pensioner, was overpaid by £246 by the War Pensions Department during the period September, 1944, to February, 1948. This was stated in the Police Court yesterday when Cleaver pleaded guilty to 31 charges involving breaches of the pensions regulations. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by Mr. H. J. Thompson, S.M. The police stated that the accused had declared that his income had been nil, whereas during the period concerned he had been working regularly on the wharves at Auckland and Wellington and had earned altogether £789 4s 3d.
