MAORIS BARRED FROM LIVING IN AUSTRALIA
(11 a.m.) CANBERRA, Apl. 29 A Maori ex-serviceman, who is the husband of an Australian woman, will not be allowed to reside permanently in Australia, according to a statement by the Minister of Immigration, Mr. A. A. Calwell, in the House of Representatives. lie was answering a question by Mr. Joe Gullett, Liberal. “By and large, the rule for Tongans is the rule for other Polynesians,” said Mr. Calwell. “Under the existing practice the immigration law can be used to exclude Tongans or Maoris.” A Liberal member: What about the Anzae pact? Mr. Calwell: I don’t care about the Anzac or any other pact. The Australian immigration policy must be maintained.
