There was a better attendance than usual at the annual meeting of the Matawai branch of the P.W.M.U. MrsA. E. Gibson presided. Mrs. R. C. Mortleman, secretary-treasurer, read the financial statement, and the result of the Paddy’s market held last Saturday, which realised over £2O. Mission boxes were opened, Mrs. J- A. Davidson, a correspondence member, sending the largest amount, and a letter resigning from this branch, having joined a town branch. A letter of thanks for the gift sent to the Rev. I. J. and Mrs. McLean was read by members. A vote of thanks was accorded the secretary-treasurer for her excellent balance sheet and organisation of the Paddy’s market, and to all who helped. Mrs. Gibson retired from the position of president, after expressing thanks and appreciation for the co-operation all had rendered during her four years of office. Mrs. T. A. Redpath was appointed president, and Mrs. R. CMortleman again appointed secretarytreasurer. An allocation of money was made to the New Hebrides Mission and to the Rev. Kihoro To Punwhe at Whakatane to use at his discretion. On Wednesday another thunder clap with vivid lightning was experienced at Matawai during the evening. Mrs. G. F. Mortleman and Mr. and Mrs. S. Sinton, Waimata, were guests at the wedding of Miss Margaret E. H. Smith, formerly of Matawai. whose future home will bo in Wellington. elected branch secretary of the union he impressed on the executive that in view of the prominence given to him, they must collectively share responsibility for all representations he made constitutionally on the union's behalf. Witness, discussing the trouble at Mangakino over catering contracts, said he was in Wellington when a meeting was held at Mangakino when a decision was taken threatening to stop work if a settlement was not made in the men’s favour.
