FUNERAL OF MR. WITHERS (S.R.) WAIROA, April 24. The funeral of the late Mr. D. H. Withers, which took place in Wairoa yesterday, was exceptionally largely attended, St. Paul’s Anglican Church being packed long before the service, which was taken by the vicar, the Rev. A. R. H. Morris. The cortege was a very long one, the large number of mourners expressing a remarkable tribute to the deceased. At the graveside the I Rev. A. R. H. Morris again took the service and Lodge Waikaremoana was strongly represented. Many beautiful floral tributes were received, whilst the widow and her family have been inundated with messages of condolence from all parts of the Dominion. The new learners’ baths at the Wairoa District High School were officially opened by the Mayor, Mr. C. V. Chamberlain, in the presence of a fair crowd. The baths, which are of small dimensions, will fill a long-felt want in Wairoa. enabling the younger children to learn to swim. The death occurcd in the Wairoa Hospital yesterday afternoon of Mr. Timothy Crimmin, aged 63 years, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Crimmin was well known in the Wairoa district, having been employed for many years as a bridge carpenter. He was very popular with a large circle of friends. Mr. Crimmin is survived by iris wife and one son, John, who is on the staff of the Meteorological Department, Wellington. The funeral will take place in Wairoa on Monday. The sister in charge of the Wairoa Maternity Annex, Miss M. Rees, in her monthly report to the Wairoa Hospital Board stated that there had been 48 admissions to the annex during March and 43 confinements. Mr. A. T. Carroll. Wairoa, is on a short visit to Wellington.—Mr. and Mrs. Innes who have been touring the Rotorua, Waikato and Taranaki districts, have returned to Wairoa. —Mr. A. White, who has been visiting his mother at Wairoa, has returned to Te Kuiti.
At the monthly meeting of the Wairoa Hospital Board touching references ■were made to the deaths of Messrs. J. M. Osier and D. H. Withers, the chairman, Mr. M. G. M. Williams, stating that both had been worthy citizens of the town and their passing was deeply regretted. At a cadet company function at the Wairoa District High School the trophies won by cadets during the year were presented by Captain L. R. Stichbury and also the promotions were announced. At the conclusion Captain Sitchbury took his final salute as O.C. ’
