ONE-DAY STRIKE
SINGAPORE WORKERS (10 a.m.) SINGAPORE. April 23. There were no incidents this morning when 350,000 workers observed a oneday general strike called bv the Singapore Federation of Trade Unions as a protest against the recent police raids on the union premises. Police jeep patrols’ toured the streets to guard against disorders. Public transport was off the roads, causing some inconvenience to office workers. Municipal labour was absent from work, causing a stoppage in town cleaning. However, the hospital attendants decided not to strike, “for the sake of the patients.” The position is unchanged in the Harbour Board strike, where there was no work on ships alongside the wharves.
