MAORI ELECTORS
NATIONAL PARTY POLICY VIGOROUS STEPS INTENDED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 24. The National Party's determination to take vigorous steps to place its policy before the Maori people and the need for new leadership and representation in the Maori seats was affirmed at a meeting of the Maori advisory council of the party held in Wellington yesterday. Representatives of all Maori electorates were present, and the Parliamentary party was represented by Mr. A. S. Sutherland. M.P., chairman of the Opposition’s Maori affairs committee. At the conclusion of the meeting reference was made to the distinguished services of Sir Apirana Ngata to the Maori people and the following motion was carried: ‘That this council congratulates Sir Apirana Ngata, who for so long has been an outstanding leader in the public life of the Dominion upon the distinction of receiving a Doctorate of. Literature which the University of New Zealand will confer on him on May 7 and records its appreciation of Sir Apirana's life work for the preservation of Maori culture.” A motion expressing confidence In I Mr. S. G. Holland as leader of the 1 party was also carried.
