OWEKA RIVER

Sir.—l should like to draw the attention of the Main Highways Board or the Matakaoa County Council to the urgent necessity of bridging the Oweka River. I have been given to understand that this river is the only hazardous crossing, during heavy rain, on the road from Gisborne to Opotiki. The travelling public are held up repeatedly, sometimes for a few days, through this river rising, which it does very quickly. It is difficult to understand that this river has not been bridged many years ago, particularly in view of the fact that many small streams have concrete structures over them. The ratepayers should rise up in wrath and demand that this work be proceeded with at once and be able to say that they are receiving fair consideration for all the thousands of pounds that they have paid by way of rates down through the years. People living in the backblocks deserve better treatment.

I sincerely trust that this work is not deferred until a life is lost, as has been the case with many such works in the past. "SUBMARINE SAM”
