ARTIFICIAL LIMBS

SOCIAL SECURITY HELP (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 10. As from April 1, the social security fund would bear a large portion of the cost of artificial limbs supplied to civilian amputees, said the Minister of Health, Miss M. Howard. As in the case of other artificial aid already subject of a benefit under the Social Security Act, limbs would be obtainable through the hospital board in the district in which the applicant resided. The benefit would be available in respect of limbs manufactured by the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-establish-ment- League and the splint department of public hospitals, said Miss Howard. It was proposed (hat the social security fund should bear 89 per cent, of the initial cost of limbs suuplies together with six limb socks, but would not Dear any part of the cost of the maintaining or keeping such limbs in repair.

The Minister emphasised that the benefit would be available only in resnect of Rmbs obtained through hosoital boards and would not be retrospective.
