FURTHER APPROACH
SETTLEMENT BID CARPENTERS’ DISPUTE MEETING WITH CABINET (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 15The National Council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour decided yesterday,to make a further approach to the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, and Cabinet for a settlement of the carpenters’ dispute. After a full day’s discussion in committee the secretary, Mr. K. McL. Baxter, announced last evening that the council had adopted the following resolutions:— "1. That this council meets the Prime Minister and Cabinet and before meeting them the council discusses and decides the policy to be formulated. •‘2. (After subsequent discussion), that when the council meets the Prime Minister and Cabinet the council presses for a tribunal or some other means for a settlement of the dispute under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, or otherwise.”
Mr. Baxter said that an endeavour would be made to make an appointment with the Government this morning for discussions in the light of the resolutions. The council decided by 14 votes to 11 at the start of the meeting that the proceedings would be taken in committee. Mr. R- Stanley, secretary of the Auckland Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Union, was present during the discussions.
