Notifiable Disease

Three cases of dysentery, one of eclampsia, two of paratyphoid fever, and one of poliomyelitis occurred in the East Cape health district during the week ended at noon today and were notified to the Health Department. There was also one death from diphtheria.

Sports Deferred The week-end rainstorm caused the cancellation for the day of all organised out-door sports scheduled for Saturday in the Gisborne district, these embracing competitions of the various bowling clubs, the day's series in the competitions of the P.B. Cricket Association, and the championship finals of the Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club. The continuing downpour yesterday also prevented the surf life-saving display and contest to have been held at Wainui Beach. The deferred cricket and bowls fixtures will, it is hoped, be played next Saturday, but owing to other events during the Coming weekend, the Gisborne tennis finals and the Wainui surfing display were postponed indefintely. When the half-yearly conference of sub-association delegations, called by the Gisborne Returned Services’ Association executive for Saturday, was discussing various activities carried on throughout the district, Mr. J. Leggat, the president, remarked upon the large amount of work devolving upon the sub-association secretaries. These officers, all of whom were acting in honorary capacities, were called upon frequently for work which involved a considerable expense of time and trouble, he said, and it was the hope of the district executive that their services were not taken lightly by their fellow-members.
