STOCK AND CROPS REMARKABLY WELL
Although pastures dried out on the flats and in the hill country, farmers pot their stock through the. dry spell in remarkably good condition,. Most farmers on the flats had water available in varying quantities and the majority did not seem to be troubled on that score.
Ground on the flats and the lowoi hills has been cracking open and the cracks have developed into fairly wide fissures in certain areas, particularly where there is peaty ground over near the foothills at the back of Patutahi. The value of cultivation has been most noticeable to farmers with crops. While the soil below their pastures has been found to be well dried out cultivated areas with a protecting tilth still retain their moisture an inch or two below surface level. Visitors to the district have commented upon the healthy appearance of the crops such as kale, Chou Mocllicr and maize.
