WAIPAOA WATER WILL BE PUMPED INTO GISBORNE MAINS TOMORROW

FOR FIRST TIME IN GISBORNE’S HISTORY

TOMORROW, for the first time in the history of the Gisborne Borough's water supply, water from the Waipaoa River will be pumped into the mains.

Two pumps have been installed and the river water will augment the small remaining supply from the AVaingake Stream and the Mangapoike dam.

As an added precaution to those being taken by the council, the Health Department in Gisborne advises that all water used for household drinking purposes should henceforth be boiled. The water being pumped from the river will be subject to a purification process and everything will be done to make it safe for drinking. Boiling will be an added precaution. _ The two pumps were installed at the river near the Bridge Hotel yesterday and were being connected to the electricity supply today. . They will be

given a trial run later today, but the water will not go into the supply mains. However, it appears certain that the pumps will be started tomorrow, when the river water will be turned into the mains. The Waipaoa River is very low, but it is estimated that the river’s present flow is between 10,000 000 and 11,000,000 gallons of water per day. It is expected that when pumping commences the pressure of water in the mains will not be lowered, but will remain approximately the same as at present.
