DOCTORS URGE LEGALISED EUTHANASIA
(10 a.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 15. More than 1000 doctors have signed a petition asking the New York State Legislature to legalise voluntary death for those who suffer from an incurable illness.
The petition, which is sponsored by the Euthanasia Society, demands that euthanasia be “brought into the open and safeguarded against abuse. After saying that many incurables now seek release by suicide, the petition adds: “Others are secretly put out of their misery by relatives who can no longer stand the sight of their pain and are willing to render themselves liable to the penalty of murder.” The petitioners suggest a plan under which euthanasia could be authorised by a court. The court, on receipt of a signed petition from the sufferer, would appoint a medical committee to investigate and make a recommendation on which the court would base its decision.
