CLOSE CRICKET GAME HANDICAP TENNIS SHOOTING AND BOWLS (Herald Correspondent.) (S.R.) WAIROA, Dec. 16. In a cricket match at Wairoa over the week-end, a Gisborne High School Old Bovs team defeated a local eleven, by 16 runs, the scores being Wairoa, 122; Gisborne, 138. The Wairoa Tennis Club is experiencing a very successful season and over the week-end winners in the handicap events were as follows: Ladies’ Singles.—Miss Kenny. Ladies' Doubles. —Mrs. Smith and Miss Marshall. Mixed Doubles.—Driscoll and Miss Archibald. Men’s Doubles. —Crarer and Halstead. The final of the men's singles will be played this week between Driscoll and Handyside. The first three heats of the Hunter Brown shield, four-oar competition were rowed on the Wairoa river on Saturday, the results being: C. Brown d. Watford, Karauria d. Cook and I. Brown d. A. Smith. Karauria and Smith will meet in the semi-final and C. Brown will meet the winner in the final. Clay Bird Shooting There was an excellent attendance at the Christmas clay bird shoot conducted by the Wairoa Rod and Gun Club over the week-end. No less than 31 shooters faced the traps and a large number of competitions were completed. Results were: Five-bird Eye-opener, handicap (19 competitors): John Brelherton, W. L. Clayton, R. Mayo, E. Eriksen, G. Smith, D. Baird, M. Bretherton, five birds each, 1. Seven-bird No. 1 Christmas hamper handicap (19): W. Johansen 1, W. Clayton 2, D. Baird 3, G. Johansen 4, I. Black 5.

Five-bird No. 6 Christmas hamper handicap (21): Geo- Duley 1, M. Bretherton 2, I. Black 3, L. Johnston 4, G. Hughes 5. J. Black 6. In the final of the Mills Cup, senior pairs, at the Wairoa bowling green on Saturday, McKinnon and Osier, jnr. (s) defeated Bainbridge and Roberts (s) 17-12.

In the junior pairs’ championship two pairs remain to play the final. They are: Single and Grant (s), and G. Marshall and Campbell (s). Schnapper Run Freely Schnapper are running very freely and on one morning last week in less than two hours Messrs. R. and W. Shortt, fishing a short distance from the shore at the Wairoa Heads took on the line no less than 61. The fish were in excellent condition. Sheep and Cattle Sale A small yarding of sheep and a small mixed yarding of cattle came forward at the stock sale held at Wairoa on Thursday. Fat and forward shorn wethers brought competition, realising 34s lOd while good five-year woolly ewes with 100 per cent, good doing Down lambs at foot also attracted the attention of the fair bench of buyers, realising 25s Id. Realisations were: Four and six-tooth wethers, 30s 3d to 34s lOd; ewes and lambs. 255; fat ewes, 355; fat lambs, 22s lOd; fat P.A. cows, £10; P.A. heifers, £6 7s; one P.A. steer, £7 10s; one Jersey steer, £6 14s. Personal Mesdames D. Clifford and L. Summerfield and Mr. M. Clifford are Wairoa visitors to Wellington where Mr. Clifford, senr., is a patient in hospital. Mrs. B. Law has returned to Wairoa after visiting Greymouth and Wellington. Among the students ordained at Napier on Sunday by His Grace Archbishop McKeefry, Co-Adjutor Archbishop of Wellington, was Noel Delaney, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Delaney, Marumaru, Wairoa, who was raised to the status of sub-deacon.
