SWING FROM LABOUR
N.S.W. BY-ELECTION (10 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 15. Voting in the by-election for the Hartley seat in the New South Wales Legislative Assembely showed a 12 per cent swing from Labour since the Federal elections last year. Hartley is a Labour stronghold which includes the entire western coalfields, the shale oil project and the industrial centres of Lithgow and Portland. It is included in the Macquarie Federal electorate represented by the Prime Minister, Mr. J. B Chifley. The figures when counting ceased last night were: Mr. J. Chalmers (Labour), 7124- Mr. H. Coates (Liberal), 4722; Mr. Alexander (Independent Labour), 1438. Liberal supporters claim a swing of 12 6 per cent and point out that a swing of' 9 per cent caused a landslide in Victoria. _______
