LYTTELTON SHIPS IDLE
FUNERAL OF WATERSIDER (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 19. The Lyttelton water s iders remain firm in their decision not to work today so that they may attend the funeral of a fellow unionist killed in an accident on the wharves on Tuesday. The Lyttelton Waterside Employers Association appealed to the union yesterday to reconsider its decision, suggesting that representatives from each ship in port should attend the funeral and that a few minutes' silence oe observed on the wharves, but the reply was that the majority of the men were adamant in their decision to attend the funeral.
With five overseas and three coastal vessels in port the decision of the Waterside Workers' Union not to work today was a regrettably mistimed way of responding to the appeal tor. a quicker turn-round of ships as a primary factor in giving aid to Britain, said a statement issued by the association.
