RIOTING IN SINGAPORE
SINGAPORE, Aug. 22. Police riot squads were called out in Singapore this afternoon when 3000 Harbour Board labourers attending the funeral of a comrade, who was killed in a shooting incident yesterday, demonstrated outside the city police station, shouting: “Death to the police!” The police cordoned off the station. The mourners, most of whom were Indians, then attacked a Royal Navy despatch rider who tried to pass the procession.
The mob beat the rider, who escaped to the police station. Harbour Board union officials earlier agreed to resume work tomorrow on the understanding that the Harbour Board would consider their demands for compensation for the dependents of the deceased and guarantees of non-recur-rence of the shooting.
