RUGBY AT MATAWAI
GAME ENDS IN DRAW GISBORNE TEAM’S VISIT (Herald Correspondent.) The game on the Matawai ground on Saturday in which the Motu Rugby Sub-union team and a Gisborne side played an eight-all draw proved a good contest in which scoring merit tested with the home players, who registered a goal from a try and a try compared with a goal from a try and a penalty goal. Several of the Gisborne side originally selected were not available and difficulties in last-minute replacements resulted in the team arriving with only 14 players, the gap being filled by one of the home union forwards. The weather was fine though cold and the match attracted a good attendance. The teams were:— Motu.—Currie: Twistleton, McMillan. A Rcdpath; M. Hollis. Apanui; Hooper; Brown S. Rcdpath, S. Boyle, captain, Richardson. Hutchins, Fisher, Calcott, Dunning. „ _ Gisborne. —H. McMillan; R. Gear, T. McGrannachan, G. Gerrard; Tuhoe, Paihana; C. O'Rourke, captain; Englebretson (Motu), Larcom McGi annachan, Hope, T. Larcom, J. Shaskey, T. Donovan, Baty. The five-eighth, M. Hollis, scored the opening try for Motu. The scoie was equalised when McMillan goaled a penalty and just before half-time a try for Motu by the wing, A. Redpath, was converted by Boyle, leaving the score eight-three in favour of the home team. , ... . „ Motu retained the lead until 10 minutes before full time _ when O'Rourke crossed for a try which was converted by McMillan and the game ended with the score eight-all. Mr. Shaw was the referee. . Currie gave an outstanding display for Motu at full-back. Boyle and Fisher were prominent forwards. Primary school teams provided a pleasing curtain-raiser, in which Matawai defeated Motuhora by nine points to three. __________
