UNWANTED AIRCRAFT
493 AT RUKUHIA FOR SALE The fate of the 493 warplanes, no longer wanted by the Royal New Zealand Air Force, lying idle at the Rukuhia airfield, is now in the hands of the War Assets Realisation Board. The general manager, Brigadier 11. E. Avery, said on Tuesday that the aircraft had been handed over to the board for disposal, and would be offered to the public either by tender or auction. Which method of disposal would be adopted the board had not yet decided, but a start would be made with the selling of the planes very soon. The aircraft, which are scattered about the airfield in various stages of disrepair, consist of 215 Corsairs, 124 Warhawks, 98 Venturas, 28 Hudsons, 22 Dauntless dive-bombers and six Avengers.' Several dozen Catalina flying-boats which have been lying at the Hobsonville base since the end of the war, are not affected by the decision to dispose of the Rukuhia aircraft. What will become of the flying-boats, many of them still airworthy, and a number of dclapidated Dauntlesses on the same air station, has still to be decided by the Government.
