EXCELLENT RECORD

TASMAN AIR SERVICE SEVEN YEARS COMPLETED Seven years' operation of New Zealand’s first external airline, between Auckland and Sydney, was completed yesterday with the departure, with no special ceremony, of the routine flyingboat for Sydney. The first of the regular trips of Tasman Empire Airways, Limited, was made on April 30, 1940, when Captain J. W. Burgess, who is now on the staff of the British Overseas Airways Corporation, commanded the flying-boat Aotearoa on the inaugural flight between Auckland and Sydney. Since then 33,000 passengers, 1,000,000 lb. of mail and 500,0001 b. of freight have been carried across the Tasman without accident. The company’s aircraft have flown 18,000 hours and 2,500,000 miles in the course of 1900 Tasman crossings.
