TEA AT 4/- LB.
NO MORE CHEAP LABOUR i CANBERRA. April 30 I The future landed cost of tea in ’ Australia, even when supplies an- i plentiful, will probably be 4s per lb This is well above the present retail [ rice, which has been kept down by j Government subsidy. Reports by Government representatives in India and the Netherlands East Indies state that the day of cheap labour in these countries is over and that the costs of picking tea will add greatly to the price. No suggestion lias been made that j the Commonwealth subsidy should be : abolished, although Government policy j has been against a continuation of sub- j sidies. Political observers predict ; strong opposition in the Cabinet when j the subject is raised.
