-CONSERVATION EFFORTS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 26. A waterfowl investigation has been begun by the wildlife branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. In announcing this, the Minister, Mr. V/. E. Parry, said the purpose of the survey was to become better acquainted with these game birds and, in turn, it was hoped that better methods of conservation might be evolved. An important aspect in this type of research, which is adopted' extensively overseas, is live trapping and the branding of ducks. The birds are then liberated, carrying with them an identification mark in the form of an aluminium ring attached to the right leg. Each bird bears a number and the address, ‘‘lnternal Affairs, Wellington, New Zealand.” The Minister said the initial work was being carried out in the Manawatu district. All persons, he added, were requested to assist in returning bands, together with particulars such as date and locality where the bird was shot or found, and the name and address of the person concerned.
